Formula Two:

For this formula, we take a situation, a question, a person, an image, etc. and turn them into two numbers that define the situation. We calculate the same way as Formula One, except the lower number is the top trigram and the higher number will be the bottom trigram. The combination will result in a predictive hexagram.

For example, we can take two names, Tom and Diane.
The woman asks about their relationship:
Tom=3 (for there are 3 letters in the name); Diane=5.

3 Li (fire)
_____
__ __
_____
5 Schun (wood)
_____
_____
__ __
The trigrams Li over Schun is hexagram 50. Hexagram 50 is “The Cauldron”, transforming what it cooks.

Hexagram 50 is “The Cauldron,” where Schun below, is wood and wind; Li, above, is flame. Together, they suggest the idea of preparing food. The I Ching says, “the fate of fire depends on wood”. A cooking pot on an open fire can spill or spoil when the wind rises. As you read the abstract meaning in the I Ching over and over again, the meaning will become clear as your unconscious mind unravels the riddle: “thus the superior man consolidates his fate”. Here, emotions are out of control. However great the emotional upset, a sacrifice must be made to put things right. My advice to her is, wood feeds fire and this is positive in the productive cycle of the Five Elements. I give this relationship three stars if they keep an eye on their emotions.

Formula Three:

In the third formula time is used to calculate both the Upper and Lower Trigrams.

The Upper Trigram will be calculated from the month, day, year of the prediction we wish to make.

The Lower Trigram will be calculated from the month, day, year and time of the prediction we wish to make.

Let’s say I receive a phone call from my business associate on January 20, 2002, at 2:45 p.m.  To Make a prediction, we do the following (remember, we use the Chinese Calendar):

January=12; Day=20; Year=7. We add these numbers for the Upper Trigram: 12+20+7=29. Now, we divide 8 into 29, which is, 3. 3x8 is 24 and 24 from 29 is 5. 5 is less than 8, so the Upper Trigram is 5, Schun.

For the Lower Trigram we just add the time of the prediction, which will be 2:45 PM or, 8: 12+20+7+8=37. We divide 8 into 37, which divide 4 times (8x4=32). And, 37-32=5. The Lower Trigram is also 5, Schun.

________
________
  schun (wood)
___   ___
__________
__________
schun (wood)
____   ____

The Schun trigram over Schun trigram is the Hexagram 57, "The Gentle".  The wind in the woods; a gentle rustling.

I give this a positive prediction for Wood over Wood is neutral and the elements do not exhaust or destroy each other. However, when seeking advice from the I Ching it is important to read both The Judgment “Success through what is small”, and The Image “the penetrating quality of the wind depends upon its ceaselessness”. The I Ching is telling me to be more dedicated to my business partner and to be more confident, for the winds are favorable.

The Moving Line:

Now, to make things more interesting we are going to add The Moving Line. After equating the first predictive hexagram the moving, or changing line shows us where the situation is going, in other words, the outcome. When this line changes to it’s opposite we now have a new hexagram. The moving line is calculated the same way for all of the three formulas that I have described. And, there is only one changing line.

To calculate the moving line we add up the month, day, year and time at the moment we wish to make a prediction. If the sum is 6 or less, then we have the moving line. If it is more than 6 then we keep dividing the sum until we have a number 6 or less.

For example, let’s take the previous hexagram of Li over Schun where a friend is inquiring about the state of a relationship. The predictive date and time is January 20th 2002 at 12:58 PM:

12+20+7+7=46; divided by 6 (6x7)=42; 46-42=4

The moving line is 4 and we always count
from the bottom of the hexagram, up

The moving line at the 4th line changes the hexagram from 50, "The Cauldron, to Hexagram 18. "Work on What Has Been Spoiled"

__________  ____   ____
__________
__________ __________
____    ____

Li
x  ...............

__________
_____   ____
Ken
_____   ____  (earth)
__________
__________
Schun
____   ____
(wood)

In the first Hexagram 50, “The Cauldron” says of the relationship “something you dearly love must be sacrificed. You cannot feel it now”. The fourth line reads: “the cauldron’s legs break. The prince’s meal is spilled. And his person is soiled. Misfortune”. The new Hexagram 18 is the result and it suggests to boldly repair the damage. We also can read the prediction of the fourth line of hexagram 18, in correlation with the moving line.  That reads:

"Tolerating what has been spoiled by the father."

In continuing one sees humiliation”. Or, something from the past will reappear and cause strife. Well, it doesn’t sound too promising. And, since Wood destroys Earth I would say there is very rough weather ahead.

The Later Heaven Formula:

The Later Heaven Formula is more difficult to calculate a prediction because it is necessary for the interpreter to be proficient in the Confucius bagua.  In addition, the interpreter will need to base his numbers from the Lo Shu and the philosophical text of the I Ching. As well as understanding the cycles of the Five Elements and the attributes of the trigrams, it also helps to be very intuitive.

We derive our two numbers to create the predictive hexagram from our keen observation of a situation. It can be something as simple as walking down the street, seeing an old man at the moment of a clash of thunder. I then look at my watch and I get a time. Thunder is the Chen(3) trigram and an old man could be the Chien(6) trigram. The lower number goes on the top and the higher number goes on the bottom. And, the moving line is found as I have described above. With this information I can predict either the fate of the old man, the weather or a situation in my own life. This is where my skill and intuition is important.

The Plum Blossom I Ching is something you can have fun with!! You could predict the weather, find out what’s in a sealed package, the arrival of someone or something, a marriage partner, and travel….any situation you need to know. The I Ching is a mysterious book, but it is a book that tells the truth.

If you would like to read more on I Ching numerology, I suggest the book “I Ching Numerology” by Da Liu. Unfortunately, this book is out-of-print, but a good look in a Used Book Store that carries out-of-print publications just may pop this gem up. Of course, you could consult the I Ching and see if it can find it for you.
