Feng Shui Field Trip

I want you to think about your neighborhood and tell me: Is there a location or a shop that never seems to stay in business?  No matter how many different owners or the kind of merchandise they sell—that one little shop or location can’t seem to stick around.  There may be a reason you never thought of (it’s more subtle than bad food and lousy service): It’s bad Feng Shui.  So, before you put down your hard earned cash to open that shop around the corner you might want to walk with me through my neighborhood and look at those areas that I’ve seen come and go over the years.

For 4 years I would drive up this T-junction at Jericho Turnpike and Covert Avenue.  Here, you see a Dunkin Donuts Shop.  As popular as this franchise is, this location is unfortunate.  A business where the main door faces on-coming traffic will cause tension, arguments or ill-health for those who work there.  Another problem this business has is the telephone pole directly in front of the main door.  This could lead to litigation and financial loss.  On a positive note, the building is painted white.  Light colored objects are more eye-catching and uplifting.  Also, white is associated with bakeries (Think: flour and sugar).  If you’re into numerology, the name, Dunkin Donuts equal six.  Six is defined as being omnipotent and powerful, its natural phenomenon is Heaven.  But, rigidity leads to a lack of adaptability.

“The sins of the architect are permanent sins “, wrote Frank Lloyd Wright.  I remember when this structure was first built in the 1970’s.  It originally was a pie shop, which might explain why the roof was designed to resemble pie slices.  The sides were plates of glass, not the solid walls you see now.  The pie shop stayed in business for only a short time and was soon converted into a Soda and Beer  facility.  That lasted for years before it was abandoned.  Now, it’s a combination pharmacy and candy store.  I wouldn’t like to live next to this hideous building, not only is it an eye sore, but the roof is a perfect example of a ‘Shar chi”.  Shar Chi are sometimes called poison arrows, and like arrows, the pointy edges of the roof send out to its neighbors harmful energy.  This is associated with ill-health, death, bankruptcy, disharmony in the family and other misfortunes.  Triangular shapes are especially undesirable.  Malevolent energy becomes collected in the apexes of the triangle where they cannot escape.  Triangular shapes also squeeze and constrict the occupants of the building.

This site is located on Glen Cove Road.  It remained an unoccupied office building for several years before this Island Eye SurgiCenter opened for business.  Notice how the office is supported by brick  pillars, thus making it appear top heavy and unstable.  The location of the parking area below the main offices forces vehicles to drive right into the building.  This is unfortunate, for the movement of vehicles below will destabilize the business.

Recommendations would be to stop using the parking garage.  Light the area with a small spotlight in each corner with the lamps illuminating upward from the ground.  You could give the inside parking area an “earth” feeling by painting the walls browns or yellows, or a mural of floral designs since live plants may not do well in the shade.
